Mis queridos (e imaginarios) lectores,

Como primera entrada, y después de una eternidad comiéndome la cabeza (literalmente) sobre qué escribir, he decidido que, dado que no se me ocurre nada lo suficientemente "convincente" para iniciar el blog (ni para continuarlo arghhg), voy a limitarme a comentar la obra de la última persona que me ha inspirado: Las esculturas-libro (intento de traducción de "book sculptures") de Mike Stilkey.

For my first post, after spending an eternity eating my head (literally) about what to write, I decided that, since I can't think of anything "convincing" enough to start the blog with (or to continue it arghhg), I'll just talk about the work of the last person who has inspired me: Mike Stilkey's book sculptures.
 

Mike nació en Tarzana, LA (Sí, Tarzana tiene ese nombre porque está situada en el rancho de Edgar Rice Burroughs, autor de Tarzán), en 1975 y, según puede leerse en su página web, siempre se ha sentido atraído por la pintura y el dibujo no sólo en papel, portadas de discos y páginas de libros, sino en los mismos libros. Mike mezcla tinta, lápices de colores, pintura y laca para crear figuras oníricas y extravagantes de animales y personas sobre las tapas y lomos de aquellos libros que las bibliotecas desechan. Al parecer, debido al pegamento de unión, estos libros no son reciclables, por lo que, y este es otro motivo para admirar su obra, él los reutiliza, dándoles "una segunda vida". ¿Cómo? Pues así:

Mike was born in Tarzana, LA (Yes, Tarzana has that name because it's on Edgar Rice Burroughs's ranch, author of Tarzan), in 1975 and, as you can read on his site, he's always been attracted to painting and drawing not only on paper, record covers and book pages, but on the books themselves. Mike mixes ink, colored pencil, paint and lacquer to create dreamlike, bizarre figures of animals and people drawn onto the covers and spines of discarded library books. Apparently, due to bonding glue, the books he uses aren't recyclable, so, and this is another reason to admire his work, he reuses them, giving them a "second life". How? Just like this:

"Books don't hold the same amount of power that they used to, because of the internet and whatnot, and they throw them away at an alarming rate"

On his website, he also quotes Edward Gorey as a source of inspiration. Someday I'll write a whole sermon about how much I love his work asdadfsdfsfdsf.
